Never let it be said I don’t finish what I start: this is the last photo in the flipwalk project. I’ve been working on this for almost six years–admittedly, with some long gaps along the way. As usual, the above is just a teaser image; for the full picture and the story of how I […]

I’ve been working on the flipwalk project for almost six years now. The first time I left my house with a coin and a camera was back in July 2004: I walked for an hour, then stopped and took pictures of where I had ended up. I wasn’t sure what I had started, but it […]

Merry Christmas to all and best wishes of the season–I’m thankful for the whole Rule Forty-Two community of readers and commenters, and wish you all the best for 2010. But that’s not why I posted this screen-capture from the Rudolph TV special. My question, which I ask myself every time I see the show, […]

I didn’t start the flipwalk project until almost three years had passed after the attacks of 9/11. The random walks around lower Manhattan lasted just about exactly a year, but it’s taken me over four years to finish writing them up. I’m sure there’s some equation that expresses the finely calibrated mix of having a […]

On Sunday, I visited the Leo Carrillo State Park, just north of Malibu. This is a picture of one of the tidal pools: I believe those elaborate patterns in the wet sand are the trails of hermit crabs.
