I headed down Maiden Lane, feeling a bit bored with the financial district, humming Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain.”
Turning south, I walked by various overpriced restaurants catering to stockbrokers. One of them disgorged two men in expensive suits. “Fuck you. Shit on you,” said the first one. The other responded, “He just doesn’t want to be bothered.” The first one seemed to find this an appropriate response.
I circled around Hanover Square and headed east for the water, walking through clumps of pigeons and men, both species with puffed chests.
There was a gate on one pier and a sign that read “NOTICE / THIS FACILITY IS IN MARSEC SECURITY LEVEL 1.”
By the East River, some men were sitting alone on benches, looking at the water. Town car drivers slept in the front seats of their vehicles, like genies waiting to be summoned.
