I heard about a drug bust that included Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Marianne Faithfull in a fur rug (?) and a chocolate bar (!?!?!), but I don’t recall the details. What exactly happened?

It started as a tabloid story: the British paper News of the World fabricated an article about Jagger taking drugs in a nightclub. When Jagger sued for libel, the paper struck back. They found out that Jagger was visiting Redlands, Richards’ country home in West Wittering, to take LSD (their source was suspected to be the acid dealer). The News called the police, who raided Redlands on February 11th, 1967. Jagger, Faithfull, Richards, and some friends had, in fact, spent the day tripping on LSD. Faithfull had just taken a bath and wrapped herself in a fur rug.

The rumor was that Jagger was engaged in cunnilingus, eating Faithfull and a Mars Bar simultaneously. “I just sat there in my fur rug, with no Mars Bar,” Faithfull said in 1987. “It’s a folk legend, and if people want to believe that when the cops walked in there was this incredible orgy going on, they will, but get it straight.” While Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” played over and over on the phonograph, the cops searched those present–Faithfull just dropped her rug. The police found four benzedrine tablets on Jagger (which Faithfull says were hers) and a piece of hash, which they returned to him, thinking it was dirt. At trial, Jagger and Richards were found guilty and sentenced to three and twelve months respectively. On appeal, the conviction was reduced to probation: the Glimmer Twins spent only one night in jail, during which Jagger wrote the lyrics for “2000 Light Years From Home.”
