Hello, citizens of Los Angeles, California, and Portland, Oregon! I will be appearing soon in your town to read from Last Night at the Viper Room, sign copies of the book, answer questions, and generally be in full authorial mode. (I’ll have everything but the pipe and the jacket with the elbow patches.) If you do not live in one of those two cities, I apologize; right now, there’s nothing scheduled elsewhere. I hope you can join me (although I wouldn’t advise buying a plane ticket to do it)–I’d love to see you.
Monday, October 28
8818 W. Sunset Blvd.
LA CA 90036
Monday, November 4
Powell’s Books on Hawthorne
3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Portland OR 97214
Take note that the Powell’s appearance is at the Hawthorne branch, not the mothership on Burnside.
In addition, I will be attending a very special event next week: a screening of River Phoenix’s last movie, Dark Blood. This film went unfinished for twenty years–he was in the middle of filming it when he died, and it was long considered impossible to complete. But recently, director George Sluizer liberated the raw footage from the insurance company’s storage facility and cut it together, using narration to cover for a few gaps in the narrative. There have been a handful of festival screenings in Europe, but it’s never played Los Angeles before. (I saw it in Amsterdam last year, and although it has some rough spots, I found it quite moving. If you’re a serious River Phoenix fan, you won’t want to miss it.)
Tuesday, October 29
6:30 pm reception / 7:30 pm screening of Dark Blood
1328 Montana Ave.
Santa Monica, CA 90403
I will be signing books at the reception and then I will give some brief remarks about the film before the screening. Tickets are $11; less if you are an American Cinematheque member.
